Hi heather I don't think these are Black bean aphids ( a pest we don't want established) but can't be sure- if they are still around can you check if the antennae are less than 2/3 of the body length and pale yellow with black tips

Leaf bases either side of leaf stem look too symmetrical for plant to be in the elm family - but not sure what it is perhaps in the Malva family.
